After years of impunity—or even immunity—in endurance riding, the national federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been suspended indefinitely by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).   AL_Tayer_Motors_UAE_-_2014_Gamilati_Endurance_Race_(13057867264)Land Rover MENA This decision follows an investigation launched by the FEI into issues regarding horse welfare and non-compliance with international regulations. The Executive Committee, chaired by Ingmar De Vos, “was unanimous in its decision to suspend the UAE national federation, effective immediately” ! As a result, the federation may no longer attend or be represented at any session or meeting of an FEI body, nor may it organize international events (a previous FEI decision had already dealt a severe blow), or send its riders to compete in international competitions. These measures do not apply to other equestrian disciplines. The FEI Executive Committee clearly stated “that any potential reinstatement will depend on the UAE federation signing an agreement and committing to take the measures deemed appropriate” to ensure compliance with horse welfare and international regulations.  “The decision to suspend a national federation is not taken lightly, and we only consider it if no other recourse is available ,” said the FEI President. “Unfortunately, this was the only option available. But we must face up to our responsibilities and not be afraid to tackle major issues. When it comes to horse welfare, the FEI must assume its leadership role and propose structural solutions without making concessions.  AL_Tayer_Motors_UAE_-_2014_Gamilati_Endurance_Race_(13057582105)Land Rover MENA This decision sends a strong message, especially since the rules had already been tightened on August 1, 2014, in preparation for the World Equestrian Games, which took place without any major incidents. However, footage broadcast worldwide since then—from races in the UAE—shows that these rules are not necessarily being followed everywhere. The UAE’s national federation was notified of its suspension by the FEI Secretary General today, March 12, 2015. It has thirty days to appeal the decision before the federal tribunal. Furthermore, the FEI is calling for unity among its members and asking the equestrian community to help it conduct a thorough investigation into allegations of falsified events and duplicated results during FEI endurance races held in the United Arab Emirates.
