"Bee Health and the Role of Veterinarians" is the title of the WOAH’s new publication.
Bernard Vallat, Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), emphasizes in his editorial the importance of good bee health for humans and plants, as the number of these pollinators has a direct impact on the agricultural economy and, consequently, on the world’s available resources.
Veterinarians, both in the public and private sectors, must play an increasingly important role in protecting bee health, regardless of the causes of the deterioration in their health status. Together with other stakeholders in the beekeeping sector, they have a responsibility to support and participate in the implementation of measures and activities aimed at improving bee health.
This handbook consists of three main sections:
- General knowledge about honeybees, including so-called wild species, and about beekeeping.
- The central role of the veterinarian in managing bee health, including the monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of bee diseases.
- Existing standards and regulations in various countries.
