Veterinary Sciences: Toulouse Veterinary School Ranks Among the Top 75 in the Shanghai Ranking
The new Shanghai Ranking of the world's best universities, which covers 54 different disciplines, has just been published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. In the veterinary sciences category, France is not represented in the top 50, but the national veterinary school in Toulouse (National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse) ranks first in France within the top 75. Unlike other international rankings, American veterinary schools are not leading the pack; first place goes to the University of Ghent in Belgium. For the second consecutive year, the national veterinary school in Toulouse has made the top 100 of the prestigious 2020 Shanghai Ranking in the veterinary sciences category. On the podium of the world’s best veterinary schools in 2020, Ghent University (Belgium) takes first place, followed by the universities of Edinburgh (United Kingdom) and Copenhagen (Denmark). In addition, Belgium has another university, the University of Liège, ranked 45th in the list, as does Denmark, with its Technical University coming in at 10th place. Four other European countries—Germany (4th, 16th, 40th, and 47th), Spain (5th and 31st), Switzerland (9th and 21st), and the Netherlands (11th and 12th), also have several institutions ranked among the top fifty. While the United States dominates the veterinary rankings with ten universities, China has managed to place seven of its universities in the global top 50. To measure the reputation and performance of universities based on the subjects taught and research programs, the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 combines five objective indicators: the number of articles authored or co-authored with international authors and their impact (via the InCites database), the number of academic awards won, and the number of scientific publications in the world’s top scientific journals. The methodology is based on that used in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
