Veterinary Education: The 2016 Ranking of the World's Top 50 Schools Has Been Released

For the second consecutive year, the list of the top 50 veterinary schools worldwide has just been released. Fifty of the world’s leading universities in the field of veterinary science are highlighted in the QS World University Rankings*, which covers seventeen different countries. Once again this year, French veterinary schools are notably absent…   [2025 Rankings: Click Here] On the 2016 podium of the world’s best veterinary schools, UC Davis (California) retains its top spot, followed by Cornell University (New York). The two American universities are ahead of the Royal Veterinary College in London, which ranks third out of 327 institutions. Thus, the United Kingdom tops the list of countries outside North America. The United States leads this ranking of the best veterinary schools by a wide margin, with 17 universities in the top 50. As the global leader, UC Davis offers programs in 34 different disciplines, and its hospital provides clinical care to more than 50,000 animals each year. Still in North America, Canada has three of its veterinary science universities included in the global ranking. In Europe, in addition to the five British universities among the top twelve, the United Kingdom has two others in the top 50, for a total of seven. Next come the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Germany, and Italy, each with two ranked veterinary schools. The six other European countries represented have only one institution ranked among the top 50. And France is still not among them… In the rest of the world, the University of Sydney is the highest-ranked of Australia’s four institutions. New Zealand is represented by Massey University. Brazil is the only Latin American country represented in the top 50 veterinary schools, with two institutions ranked. Finally, the only Asian institution selected last year—Seoul National University in South Korea—has dropped out of the rankings this year. To measure the reputation and performance of a school or university, the QS Top Universities World Rankings are based on three components: academic reputation (extensive surveys of academics and faculty), graduate employability, and research impact (publications in the Scopus database). Since 2013, another metric has also been included: the h-index. It measures both the productivity and the impact of the work published by a scientist or academic. It can also be applied to a group of scientists (a department, a university, a country) or to a scientific journal. * http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2016/veterinary-science#sorting=rank+region=+country=+faculty=+stars=false+search=
